Mathematics and Science Academy: Comprehensive Support Program for At-risk Students
School of Education

The Mathematics and Science Academy will provide after-school tutoring to third- and fourth-graders at Miller School in the Hill District, in hopes of overcoming measured deficiencies in performance in those subjects in the upper grades at that school. The project is being undertaken by the School of Education's Department of Counseling, Psychology and Special Education, which will provide special education students as tutors. Dr. Joseph Maola, chair of the department and a former special education teacher and school counselor, will be the project director.

Sequence of Activities

The first course of action will be to meet Miller School and university members who are interested in working on this project. These members will decide how students will be referred to the program, and the general course of action and persons responsible. Once students are referred, assessments of individual students' skills will begin. Student interviews, teacher interviews and family interviews will be conducted. After we review and analyze the students' information we will plan a course of study to enhance improvement. Continuous evaluation of each step will be done to determine the effectiveness of the process and satisfaction of the participants.

Products to be Developed and Impact Objectives

The goals of this project are: (1) Improving mathematical problem-solving skills of third and fourth graders at Miller School; (2) Developing role models who can serve as future tutors of students who have difficulty solving written mathematical problems; (3) Improving morale among students who are required to develop these mathematical problem-solving skills. It is anticipated that several secondary goals will be achieved. These are: (Improved reading ability; (2) Improved computational ability; (3) better interpersonal relationships among the students.
