Department of Occupational Therapy
Project Employ is a collaboration between Duquesne
University's Department of Occupational Therapy
and Bethlehem Haven, a consortium of service providers
to homeless women. The purpose of this project
is to provide case management, life and job skills
training, and intensive employment services to
homeless and formerly homeless men and women for
a variable amount of time up to two years as a
model of "best practice" in occupational
therapy for student education and fieldwork.
The department has hired two full-time practice
scholars through outside
funding from Bethlehem Haven and the Workforce
Investment Act to serve 25 - 40 participants at
Bethlehem Haven. Because this funding does not
cover the entire fiscal year, Duquesne proposes
to use COPC funds to continue their full-time
services through the end of the university's fiscal
year (June 30, 2003) to provide continuity in
services to the clients before
next year's funding begins July 1, 2003. The department
also proposes to
hire a part-time work-study student for six months
to support the project
through tasks such as accompanying clients to
CareerLinks and job
interviews, supporting service-learning projects
and assisting in other
ways.
