East Liberty
East Liberty had the second
largest shopping district in the city, serving
Pittsburgh's entire East End. In the 1960's a
major urban renewal project in East Liberty opened
new housing opportunities for low-income families
displaced by urban renewal projects in the Hill
District and elsewhere; uprooted many businesses
and families; and radically changed street patterns,
making access to the shopping district more difficult.
Where in 1970 22% of the population were African-American,
in 1990 the minority population represented 69%.
