Computers for Friends is a pilot project at
Duquesne University to explore the possibility
of refitting surplus computer equipment at the
university for reuse in schools, churches, and
other nonprofit organizations in the Hill District,
Uptown, and other low-income communities in Pittsburgh
and internationally.
For the grant period the project is primarily
exploratory. An experienced Peace Corps Community
Development Fellow from the Policy Center will
assess receptiveness of such a project at Duquesne;
explore opportunities for collaboration with such
relief organizations as Brother's Brother, Global
Links, Goodwill Industries and St. Vincent dePaul
Society; establish a protocol for assessing, retiring,
and refitting the computer assets; identify markets;
explore the availability and interests of students
to support such a project; investigate possibilities
for outside funding; and write a project plan
and recommendations. COPC funds would be used
to prepare a space, pay for travel expenses, and
purchase office and such technology supplies as
a CD burner, blank CD's, and upgrade electronics
to support the pilot effort.
