About the Classification

The Carnegie Foundation offers to institutions of higher education an elective classification for Community Engagement (CEC). Through the process of applying for this designation, we assess and promote our community engagement efforts. The CEC process helps to bring together the Duquesne constituencies that actively engage the community and help foster greater communication and collaboration among them. Duquesne University was selected for the Community Engagement classification in December 2008. This was accomplished by conducting a year-long self-study in which many faculty, community stakeholders, administrators, and staff helped to compile an accurate representation of their community engagement efforts. Ultimately, the CCE process gives great attention to community engagement at Duquesne and the Duquesne community members who keep it alive.
